MDF, Plywood, or Particle Board? Choosing the Right Panel Material for Your Component

We get some version of this question on almost every new print that crosses our desk: should this part be MDF, plywood, or particle board? There's no universal right answer — it depends on what the part has to survive, how it gets machined, and what it costs to make at the volume you need. Here's how we walk customers through it.

MDF: consistent, machinable, not for wet environments

Medium-density fiberboard is made from wood fibers bonded with resin under heat and pressure, which gives it a uniform, void-free core — no grain, no knots, nothing that surprises a router bit mid-cut. That consistency makes MDF a strong choice for parts with detailed edge profiles, routed patterns, or components that need a clean paint-grade surface, like point-of-purchase display bases or internal cabinet components.

The tradeoff is moisture. Standard MDF swells and can delaminate if it sits in a damp environment, so it's the wrong call for anything shipped or stored outdoors, or used near a loading dock that sees weather. Moisture-resistant MDF exists, but it changes the cost and machining profile, so it's worth specifying explicitly rather than assuming.

Plywood: strength-to-weight and structural applications

Plywood's cross-laminated veneer construction gives it a strength-to-weight ratio MDF and particle board can't match, along with better screw-holding and impact resistance. That's why it shows up in structural furniture components, crating and pallet parts, and anything that has to take repeated handling — a plywood pallet component holds up to forklift traffic in a way a particle board equivalent won't.

We work primarily with Southern Yellow Pine and Russian Birch plywood, which differ in grain tightness, void content and finish quality. Russian Birch runs tighter and cleaner for parts where the edge or surface shows; Southern Yellow Pine is a workhorse for structural and packaging components where appearance isn't the priority.

Particle board: cost-effective volume for the right application

Particle board is made from wood particles bonded under pressure — coarser and less dense than MDF, but less expensive at volume. It machines well for flat panel components that don't need a highly detailed profile, and it's a common choice for core plugs, dividers and internal components where the part is functional rather than visible.

It's less forgiving on fine edge detail than MDF and less structurally forgiving than plywood, so we typically steer customers toward particle board when the part is flat, high-volume, and cost-sensitive — and toward MDF or plywood when it isn't.

  • Detailed profile or paint-grade surface, dry environment: MDF
  • Structural load, impact resistance, or outdoor/shipping exposure: plywood
  • Flat, functional, high-volume, cost-sensitive: particle board
